The Benefits of Drones And Their Regulations

Technology: The Benefits of Drones And Their Regulations

Benefits

Companies & industries can use Drones for many benefits in their operations.

Drones are important tools that are already being used in a variety of industries:
- Construction: Drones monitor, map & survey on-site & document data
- Agriculture: Drones monitor crop health, apply fertilizer precisely & map fields
- Energy: Drones inspect pipelines & power lines & detect excessive heat & incidents
- Healthcare: Drones deliver medicines & PPE
- Public Safety: Drones search for missing people, extinguish fires & get disaster information

Drones have been proven to:
- Save time & money
- Minimize risk to workers
- Increase productivity, efficiency, security, safety, operations & profits

Regulations

Companies & industries must use Drones correctly & professionally by following applicable regulations.

Some of the Regulations on Drones that have been set in various countries:
- Drone usage etiquette: Keep noise down, respect privacy & avoid unauthorized surveillance of private property
- Permitted areas & operational restrictions: Permitted & prohibited distances & heights & areas
- Drone registration & operation
- Training & certifications that Drone Pilots must hold for proper & correct operation
- Safety Protocols: Inspection, visibility & caution
- Security & protection to sensitive data, information & privacy

The above regulations ensure the use of Drones is conducted safely, ethically & in accordance with professional standards.

Safety Management: Permit To Work

Safety Management: Permit To Work

Permit To Work is not just about rules & regulations, but it is more about awareness of hazard, risk, emergency & safety & real action to deal with them!

Permit To Work, which is part of Safety Management in the workplace, is required in industries with hazardous & high-risk activities (Oil & Gas, Mining, Geothermal, Petrochemical, Energy, Nuclear, Electricity, Construction, Manufacturing & others) to:

- Maintain a safe working environment
- Ensure the safety & protection of workers
- Ensure that all Safety Precautions & Measures are taken before work begins
- Ensure that only trained workers perform the work
- Ensure that each worker knows the work done & its safety requirements
- Ensure that work is carried out safely & efficiently according to plan
- Ensure the use of the right PPE
- Ensure clear communication between workers & supervisors
- Ensure that all parties are aware of Safety Procedures & implement Safety Controls
- Prevent & reduce hazards, risks, accidents, injuries & damage
- Promote a Safety Culture in hazardous workplaces
- Ensure that all work & operations are recorded & reported
- Conduct the rules

Hazards at work:
- Heat
- Fire
- Explosions
- Chemicals & toxic substances
- Gases
- Welding processes
- Confined Spaces

Well Control Operations In The Oil And Gas Industry

Safety: Well Control Operations In The Oil And Gas Industry

Well Control Operations in the Oil & Gas Industry are procedures to ensure that wells are operated efficiently & responsibly & well incidents are prevented & mitigated. The operations combine monitoring, prevention & emergency response actions to ensure Safe Well Operations.

Hazards in Well Control Operations:
- Equipment damage
- Gas, Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) & methane
- Injury & death
- Environmental damage
- Financial loss

Some actions that can be done in this operation:
- Have the right knowledge & skills about Drilling Management & Well Control Operation
- Monitor, check, manage & control the pressure, flow rate & fluid level in the wellbore using the right equipment safely & efficiently during the drilling, production & completion phases
- Use the right equipment & PPE
- Prevent, reduce & handle oil spills & uncontrolled gas releases into the surrounding environment
- Detect kicks / problems / emergencies
- Handle emergencies by shutting down pumps, raising drill strings & others
- Use BOP (Blowout Preventers) – valves installed at the wellhead – to shut down the well
- Shut down the well using mud & cement to plug & close the well
- Ensure safety & protection to workers from accidents
- Prevent environmental damage & equipment damage & production losses
- Test & maintain equipment that is done routinely

The above actions have varying complexity & reliability & require many resources, equipment & special expertise.

Proper training is the foundation of Well Control Operations to ensure personnel have the ability to monitor, detect, respond, prevent & mitigate incidents & emergencies!

H2S And Emergency

Safety: H2S And Emergency

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is:
- Toxic Gas that smells like rotten eggs & produced naturally through microbial decomposition of organic matter in swamps, ditches & volcanic areas
- By-product of the oil & gas & mining industries & wastewater treatment
- It is corrosive & flammable, making it risky & dangerous everywhere

H2S can interfere with respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, liver & more.

H2S can cause:
- Respiratory failure
- Eye irritation
- Headache
- Nausea
- Seizures
- Fainting
- Death

In case of H2S emergency:
- Evacuate immediately & move to fresh air
- Activate the alarm system to notify everyone nearby
- Call for help: Emergency & Safety Teams
- Always wear PPE if entering the area for rescue: SCBA
- Provide first aid: Oxygen, CPR & water for eyes
- Give medical treatment
- Be aware of the risk of fire caused by H2S
- Secure the area by placing ventilation & gas detectors & prohibit people from entering the area until conditions are safe
- Do not allow those exposed to gas to return to work until they are healthy again
- Investigate the cause to prevent future incidents

Warning:
- When in a Confined Space, H2S often cannot be detected because it quickly kills the sense of smell
- Rescue can only be carried out by the personnel who have taken H2S Training & are equipped with appropriate PPE & protection
- Handling H2S emergencies requires immediate & coordinated action to protect life & property
- H2S Training on Hazards, Detection Methods & Emergency Procedures is the essential training & must be done regularly to maintain Safety

Workplace Safety And Fire Safety

Workplace Safety And Fire Safety

Workplace Safety & Fire Safety are essential to protect employees, property & business continuity.

Ways to prevent & handle fires in the workplace:

- Create & implement Safety Procedures, including procedures for extinguishing fires, procedures for storing flammable materials properly & procedures for assisting those who need special treatment (disabled, elderly). All of these procedures are adjusted to the location, building type, number of workers, hazards, risks & others.
- Ensure that all workers comply with all procedures & regulations that have been made & implemented
- Assign the right workers to prevent & handle fires: Security Team, Safety Team, Fire Fighting Team
- Provide, use & maintain appropriate safety equipment, smoke detectors, alarms, emergency lights & fire extinguishers
- Determine Evacuation Procedures, evacuation routes & gathering places
- Identify potential fire hazards: Damaged electricity & machinery, flammable materials (gases, liquids, chemicals & goods)
- Train employees regularly & periodically (2 – 4 times a year) to ensure everyone knows what to do if a fire occurs: How to identify potential fires, use fire extinguishers, extinguish fires & carry out Evacuation Procedures (exit the building safely through the right route, gather at the gathering place & count the number of workers who have carried out the Evacuation Process)
- Review & update Safety Procedures & fire extinguishing procedures annually based on changes & latest information to maintain Safety Standards
- Record all Safety activities to ensure ongoing compliance & readiness

Suggestion: Companies that operate in high-risk industries are advised to conduct Fire Fighting Training 4 times a year.
