Safety: Helicopter Underwater

Helicopters have been used for:
- Transporting people, animals & goods
- Military Operations
- Carrying out rescues in various places, including on water (river & sea), in various conditions, such as natural disasters, storms, floods & others
- Becoming one of the Rescue Equipment in Safety Procedures to search & rescue victims

However, Helicopters also have limitations, so accidents can also occur in Helicopters.

Several things happen when an emergency occurs in a Helicopter flying over the water:
- Helicopters make emergency landings on water: Helicopters that have an Emergency Flotation System can float briefly when an emergency landing is made
- Helicopters sink & capsize under the water due to waves, weight, or damage

Warning: Because Helicopters are not made to operate underwater, be careful if the Helicopter sinks in water! Beware of the dangers:
- Very cold water that can cause hypothermia
- Wild animals
- Storms & waves

Passengers, Pilots & Crews must immediately use Survival Equipment & be evacuated using a Life Raft if an emergency occurs in a Helicopter underwater.

Best Advice: Pilots, Crews & Workers who use Helicopters to cross the water & work above the water must undergo special training, including taking Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), which provides the ability to exit a sinking Helicopter safely.

Safety: Confined Space Work Management

Hundreds of workers die every year due to Confined Space incidents! Proper Confined Space Work Management can save lives!

Confined Spaces in high-risk industries, such as construction, oil & gas, mining, manufacturing & more, are one of the most dangerous work environments due to limited access that makes rescue operations difficult to be done & the presence of unpredictable hazards.

Workers should not be allowed to stay in Confined Spaces for too long due to potential hazards, such as poor ventilation, toxic gases (carbon monoxide, H2S), excessive heat, low oxygen levels, damaged machinery, collapsing materials, fire, explosion, drowning & more.

To prevent, avoid & manage hazards & risks in Confined Spaces, industries must implement strict Safety Protocols:
- Confined Space work must be done by a proper & complete team, consisting of workers, Supervisors, Rescue Team & Fire Fighting Team
- Only trained workers are allowed to enter Confined Spaces
- All work & activities in Confined Spaces must be monitored at all times
- Gas Detectors must be used to check toxic gas levels
- Air Quality Control Devices must also be used so that workers can breathe safely
- Workers must have skills to use equipment (PPE, belts, Breathing Apparatus, Rescue Tools & others), handle hazards & save themselves in case of emergency

Plug & Abandonment (P&A) in the Drilling & Oil & Gas Industry refers to the process to:
- Permanently seal & isolate a well that is no longer productive & needed
- Ensure there is no environmental risk

P&A is usually performed when a well has reached the end of its economic life, is dry & no longer viable for production & exploration.

P&A Process:
- Well preparation: The well is cleaned & all production equipment is removed
- Plugging: Cement plugging equipment is installed at a specific depth to seal the wellbore & prevent fluid migration & hydrocarbon leakage to the surface or between underground formations
- Casing management: Sections of the well casing may be cut & removed, or left in place, depending on regulations
- Surface restoration: The wellhead is removed & the site is returned to its natural state or reused

P&A is essential for:
- Environmental protection
- Preventing groundwater contamination
- Complying with regulations

P&A is a complex & expensive process that demands precision to ensure long-term safety & integrity.

Safety: Steps To Enter A Confined Space And Rescue Workers

Entering a Confined Space during an emergency & rescuing workers from that environment requires:
- Careful planning
- Compliance with Safety Protocols
- Special training for emergencies

Steps to enter a Confined Space & rescue workers during an emergency:
- 2 parties involved in rescuing workers from an emergency in a Confined Space: The Supervisors outside the Confined Space & the Rescue Team entering the Confined Space
- Only the Supervisors & Rescue Team who are trained, authorized & have a Permit to Work can perform rescue actions in a Confined Space
- Using the right PPE: Respirator, seat belt, helmet, protective clothing, SCBA
- Assessing the emergency: Fire, unconscious, or injured workers
- Identifying the source of the emergency: Low oxygen, toxic gases, chemicals, falling objects
- Communicating with workers in the Confined Space using Communication Devices
- A team / more than one person must carry out the rescue process. Do not enter alone!
- Rescue Teams who rescue workers must act quickly but safely for the safety of the team & workers & to avoid creating new emergencies
- Immediately stabilizing the situation by rescuing workers & evacuating
- Immediately providing First Aid or CPR if necessary & seek medical assistance for further action
- Emergencies that occur must be reported & reviewed to identify causes & improve future safety measures

Emergencies in Confined Spaces are hazardous incidents! With proper training & preparation, emergencies can be prevented & handled safely!

Safety: Fire In High-Risk Industries

High Risk Industries (oil & gas, chemical manufacturing, mining, construction & warehousing) face fire hazards due to the Fire Triangle, complex operations & hazardous environments.

The Fire Triangle is required for a fire to start & stay burning:
- High heat: The energy required to ignite the fuel. This energy can come from matches, stoves, short circuits, or work involving welding, cutting & heavy machinery that produces heat that can start a fire. Heat raises the temperature of the fuel to its ignition point, which can cause a fire to start.
- Combustible material: Anything that can burn, such as wood, paper, iron, metal, petrol & gas. Fuel provides the material that the fire consumes to keep burning.
- Oxygen: Fire requires oxygen from the air to sustain the chemical reaction of combustion. Air contains about 21% oxygen, which is sufficient for most fires. Some industries use oxygen-rich environments, which allow fires to burn & grow.

If one of the Fire Triangle is missing, the fire will stop. To put out a fire, you must disrupt the triangle by:
- Removing heat with water
- Removing combustible materials
- Removing oxygen with a fire blanket or foam

Other factors that can cause a fire:
- Workers not following Safety Protocols
- Broken equipment & machines

Types of fires that typically occur in High-Risk Industries:
- Class A: Fires that typically occur in construction involving solid materials such as wood or paper
- Class B: Fires that typically occur in oil refineries fueled by flammable liquids such as oil or gasoline
- Class C: Fires in electrical wiring or faulty equipment
- Class D: Metal fires that typically occur in manufacturing or mining involving titanium or magnesium
- Class K: Fires that typically occur in kitchens or processing plants involving oil or grease

Industrial fires can cause:
- Injuries
- Deaths
- Environmental damage
- Financial loss

Fire Prevention & Suppression

High-Risk Industries must use strict measures to prevent & control fires:
- Regularly maintain equipment & machines
- Have a Cooling System to manage hot temperatures
- Have a Ventilation System to prevent the buildup of vapors
- Store flammable materials safely in closed containers or isolated areas
- Clean up dust or flammable debris
- Detect fires by using smoke alarms, heat sensors & gas detectors
- Use PPE: Fire-resistant clothing & breathing apparatus
- Use Fire Extinguishers: Water, foam, or other fire extinguishers that are suited to the specific type of fire
- Train workers to extinguish fires & evacuate

Fires in high-risk industries are serious, but they can be prevented & controlled with proper Precautions & Handling.
