The education sector that is too broad and the workforce development program that is not well organized make Indonesia need a better education system, a wider training program, big working space and follow new business developments for its workforce.
According to the Ministry of Manpower & Transmigration, Indonesia needs to work hard to resolve two major problems that are happening at the moment, which are the skills gap and the large number of unemployed. According to data as of February 2018, Indonesia has a total workforce of 133.9 million, of which 6.9 million are unemployed. Around 42% of the workforce are elementary school graduates, 26% are junior high school graduates, 22% are senior high school graduates and only 10% are university graduates.
Indonesia has been trying to solve this problem, and AmCham Indonesia is very happy to help Indonesian people to develop in all fields of education and workforce development, including by holding events where the AmCham’s members can share about the latest efforts and trends in the sector, and the audiences of the events can learn a lot from the success stories in education and programming workforce development that has been done by the experts. The audiences can also take the opportunity to work together with other chambers of commerce, government agencies, and other organizations.
The major event that AmCham holds in 2019 is AmCham Career Fair which is the 5th annual event organized by the AmCham Indonesia’s Education and Workforce Development Committee which aims to bring together company representatives and job seekers to encourage more active and interactive discussion and exchange of information about employment programs in companies and good career paths.
Karl Keuroghlian, the Co-chair of the Education and Workforce Development Committee Chair in AmCham Indonesia, said that the role of the Education and Workforce Development Committee Chair at AmCham Indonesia is to make Indonesian students who are seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees to know about good education in the US and the knowledge of advantages of studying in the US. The other role is trying to help them with funding whether from USAID or the US Universities themselves, and to make good cooperations between Indonesian Universities with US Universities.
The AmCham Career Fair 2019 is important, because the event is Amcham Indonesia’s way in opening the doors to Indonesian students who seek competitive jobs to understand the breath and width of a good education, how valuable is a good CV, and it is also a great way for them to market themselves.
“I hope that the AmCham Career Fair 2019 can introduce the recent Indonesian graduates who are now in the job market to the US multinational companies. Because the participating companies are generally hard to access, so this is really a great opportunity for the job seekers to not only introduce themselves but get a good feel of the requirements of a US multinational company,” said Karl Keuroghlian.
For the AmCham Indonesia itself, one of the missions to hold this Career Fair 2019 is to promote US business interests and values.
“This is a great venue for us to do so by advancing the image of US business through the promotion and advocacy of best practices,” said Karl Keuroghlian.
At the AmCham Career Fair 2019, AmChamSCOPE (part of AmCham Indonesia under the Education & Workforce Development Committee) shares experiences on inspirational and professional success stories from great leaders, such as CEOs, Directors and executives of key management of US companies in Indonesia to the audience who are usually young professionals, new and old graduates, final year students and those who will enter the job market in the near future.
“Our member companies who are the exhibitors have shown and are showing great generosity in spending the day with us at the event to be able to help in this endeavor. This is what we require for our member companies to give back,” said Karl Keuroghlian.
Some of the things that are discussed with the experts at the event are about how to develop the skills and achieve challenge for the education, how a professional work trip can take place, what important lessons can be learned during the trip occur, and there are suggestions about careers to gain experience and extraordinary professional achievement.
This event is an excellent opportunity for major industry players to discuss a better future for Indonesia for workers and their companies. This event also discusses the topic of how to be able to create a human capacity development program in Indonesia that can function properly and correctly, and what actions should be taken in the future. Another benefit is that AmCham members can get the best job candidates who will build and grow their companies, and this event can be used by AmCham members to explore new business opportunities.
Karl Keuroghlian informed that AmCham Career Fair 2019 also shares some coaching in Curriculum Vitae Writing and Interview Strategies.
