Warning: Confined Spaces are inherently risky, so preparation is the key!
If you work in Confined Space, you need to increase your chances of staying safe in a Confined Space emergency.
Ways to work in Confined Space safely:
- Know your roles in case of an emergency
- Always have a Permit To Work in a Confined Space
- Have the knowledge about the specific hazards and necessary safety measures
- Never enter a Confined Space alone!
- Have proper equipment: Respirators, harnesses, lifelines, and communication devices
- Inspect the Confined Space before entry
- Check for oxygen deficiency, toxic fumes, and other hazards
- The Trained Supervisor and Rescue Team should monitor the situation from outside
Ways to handle an emergency in a Confined Space if you're in the Confined Space:
- Stay calm!
- Check your condition and situation
- Can you breathe?
- Are you injured?
- Do your best to self-rescue
- Use a respirator
- Do your best to do Emergency Procedures
- Give an alert to the Supervisor and Rescue Team to let them know you need help
Ways to handle an emergency in a Confined Space if you're outside the Confined Space:
- Stay outside!
- Conduct the Emergency Plan you knew
- Call the Emergency Team and Services
- Conduct the Emergency Procedures
- Provide information to the Supervisor and Rescue Team: Let them know the nature of the emergency, any hazards in the space, and the location
Second Warning: If you need to enter the Confined Space, don't enter the space alone! You can become the next victim!
One thing for sure: The most important thing is to avoid entering a dangerous situation in the first place. If you have any doubts about the safety of a Confined Space, DON'T ENTER!
