Safety: Confined Space – Entry And Rescue

Some procedures for entering Confined Spaces safely to protect workers:
- Applicable regulations & established procedures should be complied with
- All workers & teams working in & supervising Confined Spaces must take the necessary training
- Hazards must be identified: Poor ventilation, low oxygen, toxic & flammable gases, physical hazards
- PPE & equipment must be used: Breathing apparatus, safety belts, protective clothing, gas detectors, tripods, safety ropes, lifelines
- A complete team should be in & around the Confined Space: Workers, Supervisors, Rescue Teams & Fire Fighting Teams
- Air quality & safety conditions should be monitored continuously during work

Some procedures for rescuing workers when an emergency occurs in a Confined Space:
- Carry out Rescue Procedures properly & quickly
- Communicate with workers for supervision & determine appropriate rescue actions
- Self-Rescue can be done by workers by leaving the Confined Space if it is safe to do so
- Rescue Without Entry is done when the Rescue Team takes out the workers from the outside using equipment
- Rescue By Entering is done when Trained Rescue Teams enter Confined Spaces to rescue workers
