Plug And Abandonment Operation – Skill And Knowledge

To handle Plug & Abandonment (P&A) Operation, the personnel must have skills to:
- Appreciate the ‘human factors’ that can impact on P&A integrity
- Manage communications between some disciplines: Asset Manager, Well Engineer, Completion Engineer, Logistics Technician & others
- Recognize the human elements of the decision-making process
- Plan & execute P&A Operation
- Ensure that P&A Operation is carried out in line with the industry directive
- Ensure a barrier is in place for good

They also must have knowledge about:
- P&A Operation
- Differences between permanent abandonment & temporary abandonment (suspension)
- Governing principles, techniques & processes of well abandonment
- Risks: Materials placement, fluid degradation, corrosion & mud contamination
- Well barriers: Materials & physical requirements
- Principles of barrier verification & testing
- Placement, management & verification of some permanent barriers
- Robust verification technique
- Cement
- Metal-to-metal sealing technology
- Casing corrosion & erosion, annulus pressure effects & environmental issues
- Mitigation involved in well abandonment
- Abandonment of recent & ageing well stock
- Well lifecycle & the environmental timeline
- Human factors
- Local Legislation & Industry Standard
