Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) is not just about equipment and Safety Protocols, but also about the human factors behind each job and those Safety Protocols.

LOTO Protocols are implemented to:

- Prevent the unexpected activation or release of stored energy in machinery

- Save workers

LOTO Protocols that must be followed:

- Isolate all potential energy sources

- Apply proper lockouts and tagouts

- Verify that the machine cannot be restarted before maintenance or service begins

These actions must be taken because uncontrolled energy can pose fatal risks, such as fire.

Several things must be done to ensure the proper implementation of a LOTO Safety Culture:

- Companies and workers must balance production goals with safety goals

- Companies and workers must understand the importance of LOTO

- LOTO Procedures must be communicated properly

- Workers must undergo training to properly perform LOTO Procedures

- Workers must have the ability to perform Established LOTO Procedures and regularly refresh their skills

- Audits to check the effectiveness of LOTO Procedures and evaluations of LOTO Procedures must be conducted periodically

- Workers must be encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others
