Besides Pilots & Crews, the other personnel who handle Helicopter Operations in offshore platforms, ships, oil rigs, buildings & others are:
- Helicopter Landing Officer
- Helicopter Load Master
- Helideck Assistant
The role of the Helicopter Landing Officer:
- Ensure the safety & efficiency of helicopter operations
- Assess & mitigate risks & hazards associated with helicopter landings & takeoffs: Weather conditions, helideck conditions & helicopter operational readiness
- Manage communication between personnel on the helicopter & onshore
- Manage passengers, equipment & cargo appropriately to prevent accidents
- Ensure compliance with Safety Regulations
- Supervise, maintain & care for the helideck
- In case of emergency: Ensure that the pilot & all persons on the helicopter & helideck are safely evacuated, the medical team has taken action & report the accident
The role of Helicopter Load Master:
- Have an understanding of Flight Safety Protocols
- Secure the load by ensuring cargo is loaded & secured properly according to weight & balance requirements for safe flight
- Handle passenger seating & safety
- Check safety on the helicopter by conducting pre-flight & post-flight checks to ensure all cargo is secured, doors are properly locked & the helicopter is safe to fly
- Communicate & coordinate with pilot, crew & passengers
- In case of emergency: Carry out cargo disposal procedures & assisting in evacuation
The role of Helideck Assistant:
- Ensure that Flight Regulations, Helideck Procedures & Safety Procedures are complied with
- Monitor weather, sea, wind, direction & environmental conditions
- Maintain the Helideck & its facilities
- Secure the area
- Ensure safety on the Helideck
- Ensure that the helideck & its equipment meet standards
- Ensure that all parties receive the information needed
- Provide information related to flight safety to the pilot
- Manage passengers & cargo
- Manage personnel movements during helicopter landings & take-offs
- Coordinate to assist operations carried out by helicopter, ship & oil rig personnel
- If an emergency occurs: Assist Rescue Operations & Evacuation Process & provide First Aid
When an emergency occurs at the helicopter, the procedures must be done:
- Swim!!!
- Self-Rescue
- Use equipment: PPE, life jacket, breathing apparatus, raft
- Get out of the capsized or sinking helicopter safely
- Handle panic & stress
- Survive
- Use Rescue Signals to notify the Rescue Team
