Hazard And Risk On Offshore Oil And Gas Installations

Safety: Hazard And Risk On Offshore Oil And Gas Installations

Offshore Oil & Gas Installations face a complex set of hazards & risks!

Hazards on Offshore Oil & Gas Installations (Drilling Rigs, Production Platforms & Floating Production Storage & Offloading Units):
- Fire & explosion: Hydrocarbons can burn & gas can cause explosions
- Equipment damage: Pipes, engines, cranes, rigs
- Bad environmental conditions: Lightning, waves, storms, typhoons
- Chemicals & other toxic hazardous substances: Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), drilling fluids & others
- Accidents that occur in helicopters & ships
- Other hazardous conditions: Failure in the drilling process, failure in the operation of equipment & machinery, oil spills, emergencies in Confined Spaces
- Human factors: Fatigue due to excessively long working hours

Risks that occur:
- Injury
- Death
- Environmental damage
- Operational disruption
- Economic losses: Time, repairs, costs
- Regulatory & legal obligations: Official parties can stop operations & impose sanctions & fines
- Reputational damage: Public trust, investor confidence & market position will be disrupted

To manage these hazards & risks, Offshore Operators & Companies are required to implement Operations, Control, Emergency & Safety Management to ensure the safety of personnel, assets & the environment:
- Comply with regulations made by maritime organizations, HSE organizations & regional bodies
- Create & comply with Safety Protocols: Permit To Work, Emergency Response Procedures, Safety & Survival Protocols
- Provide appropriate PPE: Fire-resistant clothes, masks, fall protection equipment
- Prevent damage, explosions & fires
- Routinely maintain & inspect equipment, machinery, pipes & rigs
- Monitor the environment: Weather, natural disasters
- Use state-of-the-art technology to monitor operations: Remote Monitoring Devices, Drones
- Limit environmental impact: Spill Response Plan & Containment System

The Offshore Operators & Companies must provide the right training for workers too so the workers can:
- Work properly
- Handle equipment & machines
- Identify & handle hazards & risks
- Perform Evacuation Processes
