Work And Safety At Confined Space

Warning: Confined Spaces are inherently risky, so preparation is the key!

If you work in Confined Space, you need to increase your chances of staying safe in a Confined Space emergency.

Ways to work in Confined Space safely:
- Know your roles in case of an emergency
- Always have a Permit To Work in a Confined Space
- Have the knowledge about the specific hazards and necessary safety measures
- Never enter a Confined Space alone!
- Have proper equipment: Respirators, harnesses, lifelines, and communication devices
- Inspect the Confined Space before entry
- Check for oxygen deficiency, toxic fumes, and other hazards
- The Trained Supervisor and Rescue Team should monitor the situation from outside

Ways to handle an emergency in a Confined Space if you're in the Confined Space:
- Stay calm!
- Check your condition and situation
- Can you breathe?
- Are you injured?
- Do your best to self-rescue
- Use a respirator
- Do your best to do Emergency Procedures
- Give an alert to the Supervisor and Rescue Team to let them know you need help

Ways to handle an emergency in a Confined Space if you're outside the Confined Space:
- Stay outside!
- Conduct the Emergency Plan you knew
- Call the Emergency Team and Services
- Conduct the Emergency Procedures
- Provide information to the Supervisor and Rescue Team: Let them know the nature of the emergency, any hazards in the space, and the location

Second Warning: If you need to enter the Confined Space, don't enter the space alone! You can become the next victim!

One thing for sure: The most important thing is to avoid entering a dangerous situation in the first place. If you have any doubts about the safety of a Confined Space, DON'T ENTER!

Driller In The Oil And Gas Industry

Are you working in the Oil and Gas Industry? Are you working as a Driller or Assistant Driller?

If you work as a driller or assistant driller, you must have some of the knowledge about:
- Drilling and its methods
- Well: Goals and planning
- Casing, Cementing, Completion and Fluid Programs
- Barrier Management
- Geology and rock formations
- Hydrostatic, Static, and Dynamic Wellbore Pressures
- Formation stress and strength
- Gas
- Temperature and pressure
- Drilling fluid
- Well control on high-angle wells
- Mud and Hole Management
- Normal and Shutdown Operations
- Changes to drilling mud and parameters
- Causes of kicks
- Abnormal formation
- Prevention of kicks during Drilling, Casing, and Cementing Operations
- Testing, identification, and use of barriers
- Risk Management
- Emergency Procedures
- Top hole drilling
- Causes of imbalance in the top hole
- Kick detection and shut-in
- Well flow with the pump off
- Early response and stop work authority
- Equipment: Cables, pipes, valves, drill strings, gas detectors, tanks and others

You should also have some skills to:
- Explain the impact of gas migration on wellbore pressure
- Explain the causes of kicks in on-bottom and off-bottom conditions
- Explain the principles underlying the constant bottom-hole pressure method for shutting down a well
- Determine well control equipment requirements for surface and subsea operations
- Calculate volumes and capacities for various drilling operations
- Calculate static and dynamic pressure in various wellbore conditions
- Identify kicks
- Complete kill sheets for vertical wells and deviated wells
- Shut-in wells in various operations

Travel To The Sea

Before you travel to the sea, here's some good information that you need to know:
- Emergency can always happen at the sea
- To survive the emergency at sea and to rescue yourself and others, you need the right knowledge to handle the emergency
- When you can successfully handle the emergency at sea and survive from the sea, you might feel stress
- To continue life perfectly, you need the right skills to handle the stress
- You need the right skills to care of yourself and others

Ways to handle the emergency at the sea and to survive from the sea:
- Wear the right PPE, life-saving equipment and survival equipment
- Conduct formation
- Transfer the personnel / the other people
- Hoist and jump
- Have the right skills to rescue yourself and others
- Have the right skills to handle the stress

Some of the right survival equipment you need to use:
- Life Raft
- Net
- Lifeboat

The only way to have the right knowledge to travel the sea safely and to self-rescue from the emergency at sea is to take the right training!

Working Offshore

Situations and conditions you need to know if you work offshore!

Incidents and Emergency can happen because of:
- Gas
- Hazardous substances
- Chemical stuffs
- Fire

The Incident and Emergency can happen at:
- Closed containers
- Pressure vessels
- Confined Spaces

Ways to handle the Incident and Emergency on offshore:
- Detect and fix the emergency
- Handle the emergency as a team
- Use the right PPE
- Use Breathing Apparatus
- Handle the gas and chemical stuff
- Extinguish internal and external fire (Class A, B, and C) by using a Hose, Water, and Foam
- Conduct the decontamination procedures
- Stabilize the Incident and Emergency
- Conduct cooling and isolation

The main personnel who must handle the Incident and Emergency offshore is the Offshore Emergency Response Team Member (OERTM)!

Fire

Information about fires you should know:
- Big fires start from small fires
- The easiest and most modern tool for extinguishing small fires is a Portable Fire Extinguisher

Several steps to extinguish a fire:
- Give a warning by shouting "FIRE!!!"
- Call for help
- Turn on the fire alarm
- If the fire alarm can turn on automatically: Ensure that the fire alarm has turned on / sounded
- Ensure that fire extinguishers can be used
- Keep yourself and fire extinguishers away from fire
- Position yourself and the fire extinguisher in the right position and away from obstacles
- If a fire breaks out inside a room/building: Close the door to contain the fire and prevent wind from directing and enlarging the fire
- Extinguish fires in the right way!

It is very important to have knowledge of fire and the ability to put out fires!
